Phase 4 — Midwest, Great Lakes & Deep South#

Home Base: Salt Lake City, UT
Best Season: May–June or September–October
Avoid: January–February in Great Lakes (brutal cold, ice storms); July–August in Deep South (extreme humidity and heat)
Estimated Duration: 4–5 weeks
Estimated Miles: ~5,500–6,500 miles round trip

Why This Phase#

This is the most culturally rich and diverse phase of the entire trip. In a single loop you'll move from the pristine shores of the Great Lakes to the bayous of Louisiana, from the birthplace of rock and roll in Memphis to the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. The Deep South's history — Civil War battlefields, the Civil Rights Movement, jazz, blues, Cajun culture — is irreplaceable American experience.

Phase 4 Camping Strategy#

Free/dispersed:

  • Shawnee National Forest (IL) — Garden of the Gods area
  • Hoosier National Forest (IN)
  • Wayne National Forest (OH)
  • Ozark-St. Francis National Forest (AR/MO)
  • Natchez Trace Parkway (primitive camping along the trace — free)
  • Monongahela National Forest (WV) — Seneca Rocks/Spruce Knob area
  • George Washington & Jefferson National Forests (VA)

Budget paid / notable:

  • Apostle Islands — kayak camping on islands (spectacular but requires planning)
  • Cuyahoga Valley NP — Stanford House Hostel (historic, cheap lodging option for cold nights)
  • Red River Gorge (KY) — Daniel Boone NF, dispersed available
  • Great Smoky Mountains — free entry (no NPS fee), but campgrounds require reservations

Urban overnight:

  • Walmart/Cracker Barrel: widely available throughout Midwest and South
  • Casinos (especially in MS, LA) — many offer free overnight parking to gamblers; you don't have to gamble much

Phase 4 Shower Plan#

  • Planet Fitness: Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Birmingham, Louisville, Richmond
  • Truck stops: I-80, I-90, I-94, I-40, I-55, I-65 corridors all well-served
  • Hot springs: Hot Springs, AR — Buckstaff Bathhouse (historic, bathhouse row) — a genuine American experience, budget-friendly

Phase 4 Practical Notes#

  • Michigan Upper Peninsula: Requires crossing the Mackinac Bridge ($4 toll). The UP is one of the most underrated regions in America — Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, and Porcupine Mountains are extraordinary. Add 3–4 days if possible.
  • Great Smoky Mountains: Most visited national park in the US. No entry fee (no gate). Can be extremely crowded July–August. Visit early morning or late evening. Cades Cove wildlife viewing loop is spectacular at dawn.
  • New Orleans: Van/street camping in New Orleans is not recommended due to safety. Use a campground in Metairie or Slidell, or book a Harvest Hosts stop nearby.
  • Natchez Trace Parkway: A remarkable 444-mile scenic road from Natchez MS to Nashville TN. No commercial vehicles, 50 mph limit, no advertising. Multiple free primitive campgrounds along the entire route. Use this.
  • Civil Rights Trail: Alabama has the most concentrated Civil Rights history in America (Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham). Budget a full day for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. This is important American history.
  • Bourbon Trail (KY): Many distilleries offer free or low-cost tours. Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve. Budget $20–40/person for a day of distillery hopping.

Phase 4 Drone Overview#

  • No-fly: Great Smoky Mountains NP, Cuyahoga Valley NP, Indiana Dunes NP, New River Gorge NP, Hot Springs NP, Mammoth Cave NP, Effigy Mounds NM
  • Legal standouts: Shawnee National Forest Garden of the Gods (IL — dramatic sandstone formations from above), Red River Gorge (KY — Daniel Boone NF, stunning gorge and rock arch aerial views), Monongahela NF near Seneca Rocks (WV — one of the most dramatic East Coast landscapes), Hocking Hills State Forest (OH — check state rules), Loess Hills (IA — unique geological feature, open BLM/state land), Apostle Islands from the water (check LAANC for proximity to Bayfield airport)
  • New Orleans: Urban photography from above — check LAANC, multiple class C/D airports nearby
  • Mississippi Delta: Vast flat farmland — legal, safe, and hauntingly beautiful from the air
